I started active participation in karate at 4 years old, which lead to both teaching and competing at national and international level with the Welsh team from the age of 17 through to my early 20’s as a kumite exponent (fighter). During this time I found the need to make myself physically stronger for my karate career. Within 6 weeks of beginning weight training I found I was receiving more questions about my sporting background than at any time in my previous years of karate. I was hooked! I trained very hard and very heavy and enjoyed every second. In the next 12 years I got married, had 2 children and supported Mike through a successful competitive career. In 1999 I took the bull by the horns and competed as a heavy weight physique. From 1999 to 2001 I competed 7 times, each time getting leaner and heavier and loving it! Since competing I have come off the stage to behind the table where I can be seen judging at numerous shows throughout the UK. I have enjoyed participating in the judging of European and World competition and pride myself on being an open, honest and approachable judge. I have recently taken over the role of UKBFF membership secretary and have been involved in the running of the Welsh qualifier since 1997 which was run by Paul Grant at the time. When Paul sadly passed away myself, Mike, Neil Hill and his wife Ang took over the reins and for the last few years it has just been myself and Mike organising, running and promoting the show. The Welsh is now 1 of the most hotly contested shows in the UK. My motivation is now seeing others improve, succeed and achieve their goals which I do through coaching people of all levels from beginner’s right through to Olympic athletes.

A former national bodybuilding champion, Kerry Kayes is the backbone of British bodybuilding.

He has been involved in the nutrition industry for many years & his dietary expertise has established him as 'the man in the know' to professional bodybuilders worldwide. His personal investment in the sport is limitless: sponsoring national championships & local shows alike. However, his investment is not only financial, demonstrated by the many hours he spends preparing & advising bodybuilders he makes no distinction - this is his life, this is his love.

Kerry Kayes would give nothing but the best.

Born 25th October 1967. Started weight training at 16 to improve my power for competitive karate when I fought for Wales. Karate is also where I met my wife Leica – love at first fight!! Soon the weight training turned to bodybuilding and I began competing in 1991. From that time until 2000 I achieved 3 Welsh titles, a 3rd place at British level and some qualifying wins. I put the competition on hold for a few years whilst I returned to full-time education to gain a 1st Class Honours Degree in Applied Sports Science. I still trained during this time, gained my 3rd degree karate black belt and also coached others to achieve their goals – competitive or otherwise. At the British Grand Prix I had the honour of receiving an IFBB Masters in Bodybuilding and Fitness Diploma. Whilst coaching a competitor to a win at the British Finals I decided to give competition another try. I won the masters at the Stars of Tomorrow after 8 weeks of prep, this then lead to a 4th Place at the IFBB Europeans and a World’s qualification at the end of 2008. Apart from my commitment to the smooth running of UKBFF qualifying contests plus running backstage at the British Finals I also MC at some of the qualifiers and along with my wife run posing and presentation courses for competitors. I have recently started my own gym and personal training business and along with promoting the Welsh qualifier, overseeing the check-in at most other shows and getting the Instructors courses underway 2011 is going to be another busy year. With, hopefully, another crack at an IFBB International title at the end of it!!
